City’s Let’s ACT brings climate action murals to communities

The City is taking energy efficiency and climate action awareness directly to communities, rolling out community-created murals in Atlantis and Lansdowne as part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival. Developed through co-design workshops, the murals – by artists Wayne Beukes (Atlantis) and Kyle Murphy (Landsdowne) – reflect local insights and experiences while promoting practical actions towards more sustainable living.
‘The City’s Let’s ACT campaign drives the message that small actions can lead to big changes. We all have the power to make a positive contribution to our schools, homes, workplaces, neighbourhoods and communities. The murals place residents at the centre of sustainable living through creativity and collaboration directly on their doorsteps. The murals will be a daily reminder of the actions all residents can take to live in a more sustainable, climate-friendly manner.
‘From concept development to implementation and unveiling, these murals are more than public artworks, they are a platform for communities to express their role in shaping a more resilient, energy-conscious future. The community murals reinforce the City’s commitment to building a more sustainable and inclusive Cape Town.
‘By involving residents directly in the design and storytelling process, we are not only raising awareness about clean energy, energy efficiency and climate action, but also empowering communities to take ownership of sustainable solutions that will benefit their neighbourhoods now and for generations to come,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.The murals at two City libraries are part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival, a city-wide movement to equip residents with the information to make better energy choices. By providing residents with knowledge, practical tools and inspiring experiences, the festival is helping households while creating awareness about the changing energy landscape and climate impacts. The murals are the most recent part of the festival, following on from various shopping mall pop-ups, the Let’s ACT at Home exhibition at the Building Centre in Ysterplaat and the Energy Efficiency Schools Programme’s play and workshop events at schools across the metro.
Our Shared Energy Future, the City’s Energy Strategy, sets out our 2050 vision of energy security for a prosperous Cape Town. This vision is guided by the principles of reliability, affordability, carbon neutrality over time and resilience, and since then we have been working hard to drive energy security and enable the uptake of sustainable energy. Our programme of action commits us to harness new energy supply, alleviate energy poverty and optimise energy use.
